After Surgery Care

Dr Rob McCusker Paediatric General Surgery, Paediatric Urology, and Neonatal Surgery Gold Coast Queensland

What happens after surgery?

Once your child’s operation is complete, Dr Rob will call you to let you know how everything went. While your child is still asleep, Dr Rob will write up his operation notes. During this time, the anaesthetist will carefully wake your child and take them to the recovery room, where they will be monitored closely by nursing staff.

If time allows (i.e. if Dr Rob is not heading straight into another surgery), he will come to see you and your child in the recovery area once they are awake. If not, rest assured he will have spoken with the recovery team and will check in again as soon as he can.

If Your Child Is Staying Overnight

If your child is staying in hospital overnight, Dr Rob will visit the following morning to check on their recovery and discuss the next steps. If all is going well, your child may be discharged that day. If a longer stay is needed, Dr Rob will continue to review your child daily until they are ready to go home.

During the hospital stay, the nursing team will take excellent care of your child — and Dr Rob remains just a phone call away if anything needs reviewing or adjusting.

On discharge, the nurses will provide clear instructions from Dr Rob on how to care for your child at home, including any medications or activity restrictions.

  • In person at Dr Rob’s rooms, or

  • A Telehealth appointment (via video or phone), depending on what suits your family best.
