Antenatal Counselling

Abnormal pregnancy scans are a surprisingly common experience, with up to 3% of pregnancies having some kind of anomaly detected. This number is growing as ultrasound technology and genetic testing advances.

The most common abnormal finding in pregnancy is a dilated kidney. The spectrum of conditions that may result in a dilated kidney is wide, and can range from mild to severe. Many dilated kidneys in utero will resolve and be normal at birth. Most children will have a few scans after their delivery. Approximately 1 in 10 will need some kind of surgery, but predicting this depends on many factors.

Ultrasound can detect abnormalities in many other organ systems that paediatric and neonatal surgeons are trained to treat, including the neck, oesophagus, lungs, liver, intestines, diaphragm, abdominal wall defects (gastroschisis and omphalocele), bladder, ovaries, testicles and sacral tumours.

Dr Rob is trained in neonatal surgeries, and is a compassionate and empathetic surgeon who is an expert at providing relevant, understandable and in-depth information about conditions that may be seen on pregnancy scans, and how they may be managed after birth.
