About Dr Rob McCusker
FRACS (Paediatric Surgery) MBBS MSc (Trauma) DCH
Dr Rob McCusker is a compassionate and highly skilled specialist in Paediatric General Surgery, Paediatric Urology, and Neonatal Surgery.
Growing up in rural South Australia, Rob obtained his medical degree at the University of Adelaide, after which he was accepted into the competitive Paediatric Surgery training program. His training took him across Australia, including Adelaide, Darwin, and Townsville, ultimately concluding at the prestigious Royal Children’s Hospital in Melbourne.
Further advancing his expertise, Rob completed additional specialist training in Paediatric Urology and Paediatric Colorectal Surgery at the internationally renowned Bristol Royal Hospital for Children in the United Kingdom. It was there that he developed advanced skills in hypospadias surgery and minimally invasive techniques, particularly in the fields of intestinal, kidney, and hernia surgery.
Upon completing his specialist training, Rob and his family relocated to the Gold Coast, where he began his role as a Staff Specialist Paediatric Surgeon at Gold Coast University Hospital. He also operates at Pindara Private Hospital and John Flynn Private Hospital.
In addition to his clinical expertise, Rob has a Masters of Trauma Science from Queen Mary University in London, a Diploma of Child Health, and has attended advanced courses in Paediatric Robotic Surgery in Strasbourg, France, Paediatric Colorectal Surgery in Madrid, Spain, and Urodynamics in Southmead, Bristol. He is also passionate about medical education, and teaches other doctors to optimally manage critically ill and injured children as an instructor in Advanced Paediatric Life Support (APLS), Emergency Management of Severe Trauma (EMST), and Emergency Management of Severe Burns (EMSB).
When he’s not caring for children with surgical dilemmas, Rob enjoys spending time with his wife and their four young children.

Areas of Interest
His areas of special interest include minimally invasive surgery, complex hypospadias, foreskin procedures, paediatric kidney and bladder surgery, disorders of continence, undescended testes, hernias, hydroceles, burns, burn scars, skin and soft tissue lesions, surgical conditions of the newborn, and gastrointestinal disorders.
