Angular Dermoid
What is an Angular Dermoid?
Angular dermoid, which is also called Supraorbital dermoid, is a condition where a cyst is sitting at the top corner of the eyebrow. It is a condition that your child is born with, and the cyst is expected to slowly enlarge over time.
They present as a visible lump at the outer tip of the eyebrow.
Angular dermoids sit below the skin and muscles of the face, and groove the bone. They do not usually get infected, and are never cancerous. There is very little risk of it coming back after it has been removed.
OUR APPROACH
Dr Rob offers excision of angular dermoids that are in a classic lateral supra orbital location. Dermoids can arise in multiple other locations on the head. If they are in the middle of the head or face, then your child will also need to have a MRI of their head, to check if the cyst also has a component on the inside of the skull bone.
If the dermoid cyst is expected to be only on the outside, then Dr Rob will remove it under general anaesthetic. The hole will be closed with dissolving sutures and glue.
It is a day procedure. You can take your child home the same day. They will not be very sore, and should be back to their usual selves within a day or so. The wound will have glue on it and sometimes a little white sticky dressing. You may shower your child the very next day.
Dr Rob will see you in his clinic 1 week later to be sure your child is making the expected recovery.
