Inflammatory Bowel Disease

What is Inflammatory Bowel Disease?

Inflammatory bowel disease encompasses Ulcerative Colitis, Crohn’s disease, and Indeterminate Colitis. It is an autoimmune condition which can run in families. It may have intestinal and extra-intestinal manifestations and is medically managed by Gastroenterologists.

Surgeons may be involved for;

  • Curative procedures (such as colectomy for Ulcerative Colitis)

  • Management of complications (such as perianal abscess, fistula, bowel strictures or colonic perforations)

  • Vascular access devices for medications and nutrition support
